MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is expecting 72 more Filipinos to arrive back from Sudan on Tuesday, which would bring total repatriates to 442.

A group of 40 arrived back home on Monday, DFA Spokesman Ma. Teresita Daza said. The Philippines began its evacuation efforts two weeks ago, bringing Filipinos in Sudan to cross to the border to Egypt by land.

The Department of Migrant Workers and its attached agency, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, joined in efforts to facilitate their evacuation.

Filipinos were given a US$200 financial aid upon crossing the border and those who did not have travel documents were assisted by DFA’s consular services team. Upon coming home, the DMW said evacuated Filipinos are given P50,000 cash assistance on top of a care pack bag that had first aid items and other essentials.

Their families will also be given P50,000 aid through the OWWA in their home regions.

The government also handed information sheets to Filipinos upon their arrival “to identify necessary support and assistance interventions, including reintegration and redeployment options.”

Migrant Workers Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople previously said that they are looking for job placement opportunities back home and possibly in Saudi Arabia for displaced overseas Filipino workers who were working in Sudan.
