MANILA, Philippines —  Despite reports of increasing coronavirus cases in the country, Archdiocese of Manila Vicar General Fr. Reginald Malicdem says there are no plans, for now, to put additional safeguards against COVID-19 other than the use of face masks.

“We just continue to encourage mass goers to wear their face masks,” he said.

Malicdem also believes that the reports of an increasing number of COVID-19 cases would not discourage the Catholic faithful from physically hearing masses and attending other religious activities.

Last month, Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula and other bishops encouraged the Catholic faithful to return to attending in-person masses.

During the Holy Week, Catholics were seen to have flocked to churches and participated in traditional activities, such as the Visita Iglesia, masses and processions.

The Department of Health (DOH) reported on April 19 an additional 382 COVID-19 cases, bringing the country’s total number of cases to 4,086,981. The active tally went down from 10,263 last April 18 to 8,252 the following day.

It reported that the total number of recovery from the virus was at 4,012,286 while the death tally stood at 66,443.
