PNP seeks to join forces with Coast Guard, Navy
MANILA, Philippines — In a bid to boost efforts to secure the country’s territorial waters, the Philippine National Police (PNP) wants to join forces with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Philippine Navy.
PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin said he wants to enter into an agreement with their counterparts from the PCG and Navy to curb transnational crimes such as smuggling and human trafficking, particularly along the boundaries with Indonesia and Malaysia.
“We want to have a memorandum of understanding with the PCG and Navy to secure our seas and prevent the entry of contraband,” Azurin told reporters on Monday.
The capability of the PNP’s Maritime Group is limited to securing the shorelines of the country using high-speed tactical watercraft, he said.
With their limited assets, Azurin stressed that the three law enforcement agencies must join forces.
The PNP has procured P1.2 billion worth of equipment to beef up the operational capabilities of police units.
Among these are two tactical sea vessels and 200 patrol vehicles.
