DOT: Philippines remains ‘attractive’ for Japanese tourists, businessmen

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines remains an attractive destination for Japanese tourists and businessmen, the Department of Tourism (DOT) asserted yesterday, following meetings attended by President Marcos in Tokyo.

The President was joined by Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco in meeting Japanese tourism stakeholders last Thursday and assurances were made for the “continued support” of government for tourism.

The country could “attract a large number of Japanese tourists with its many tourism offerings” after it reopened its borders a year ago, said Takahashi Hiroyuki, chair of Japan Association of Travel Agents.

“The Philippines is very appealing for Japanese people with its hospitality and cheerfulness. Furthermore, the Philippines [has] a mild climate all year, making it a popular destination for younger people to relax at beach resorts like Cebu and Boracay Island; and for retirees, (for) an extended period of time,” said Hiroyuki.

“Many Japanese companies have also established operations in the region. We anticipate further growth as a business travel destination,” he added.

The Marine Diving Fair, a leading event in Asia for diving enthusiasts, also looks forward to its exhibitors promoting diving destinations in the Philippines.

Moreover, the Japan Philippines Tourism Council said it is “eager” to restart tourism activities for this year to introduce the Philippines to Japanese citizens.

Data from the DOT showed that the Philippines welcomed a total of 99,557 Japanese travelers last year.

Frasco said the agency intends “to further develop tourism products that are popular among Japanese tourists, including diving, MICE and education tourism, particularly English as a second language.”

“With the resumption of travel post-pandemic and the growing interest in sustainable tourism, we are seeing new and innovative programs emerging in school trip modules offered in the marketplace,” she said.
