MANILA, Philippines — The Anti-Money Laundering Council has confirmed that the self-confessed gunman in the fatal ambush on broadcaster Percy Lapid indeed received P550,000 in his bank account for the killing, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said Saturday.

“The AMLC released a report yesterday revealing that gunman Escorial’s statement is very accurate. P550,000 was deposited to his account within a certain amount of days,” Remulla said partly in Filipino over DZBB.

Joel Escorial is the self-confessed gunman in the killing of Lapid who said he received P550,000 in his bank account for the hit on the broadcaster known for his sharp criticism of the Duterte and Marcos Jr. administrations.

Remulla said the sum of P550,000 was deposited to Escorial’s account in tranches by different people over a three-week period.

“There were many deposits,” he said. “Different people deposited money. The NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) will explain it on Monday because they know the details.”

Escorial said he was acting on the orders of someone from inside the New Bilibid Prison through an intermediary whom he named in his affidavit as Jun Villamor. Villamor died at the Bilibid the same day Escorial was presented to the press.

Villamor’s death was later found to be caused by suffocation using a plastic bag.

It is expected that the NBI will file murder complaints on Monday against those involved in the killings of Lapid and Villamor. — Xave Gregorio
