MANILA, Philippines — UniTeam candidate Harry Roque has vowed to intensify the program to address malnutrition, one of the country’s longest problems, if elected to the Senate.

The Philippines ranked sixth in East Asia and the Pacific region and among the top 10 countries that has the most stunted children across the globe.

Roque, a former congressman and presidential spokesman, said presidential aspirant Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and running mate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio would help lessen hunger in the country.

“If you would allow us to serve the country, we will solve hunger problem in your areas,” he said in Filipino during a campaign rally in Catarman, Northern Samar.

“We are already a medium income country. We are not a poor country anymore, so we have to put an end to hunger,” he said.

He added he would refile a bill creating the Commission on the Right to Adequate Food to achieve “zero hunger,” which he filed during the 17th Congress.

The bill seeks to determine the minimum amount of food to be given to any person suffering from hunger or undernutrition, provide physical and economic access to food and set up a well-functioning distribution, processing and market system.
