MANILA, Philippines — The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Monday said nearly 4,000 persons have been affected by the recent volcanic activity of Taal.

In its situational report on Monday morning, the NDRRMC logged 1,060 families or 3,850 persons in 14 barangays in Batangas province were affected.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Saturday escalated Taal Volcano to Alert Level 3, warning that there is magmatic intrusion at its Main Crater that may drive succeeding eruptions.

With the raised alert level, the Phivolcs recommended evacuation of communities in Batangas due to possible hazards of pyroclastic density currents — or hot, fast-moving flows of gas, ash and debris — and volcanic tsunami if stronger eruptions happen.

The affected families are from the towns of Agoncillo, Laurel, San Luis, Taal, Calaca, Calatagan and Lemery, the NDRRMC report said.

Of the displaced families, 956 families or 3,460 are seeking temporary shelter in 16 evacuation centers while 54 other families of 201 people are staying outside these facilities.

In its latest report as of Monday, 5:00 a.m., Alert Level 3 remains hoisted over Taal, which means intensified unrest or magmatic unrest. Philvolcs also said in the past 24-hour period, the Taal Volcano Network did not detect any volcanic earthquake.

The Phivolcs bulletin stressed that entry into Taal Volcano Island (Permanent Danger Zone or PDZ) and high-risk barangays of Agoncillo and Laurel is not allowed.

All activities on Taal Lake and flying any aircraft close to the volcano are also prohibited. — Kristine Joy Patag
