23,290 schools suspend classes in Visayas, Mindanao due to Odette
MANILA, Philippines — A total of 23,290 schools have suspended classes in all levels in the Visayas and Mindanao due to Typhoon Odette, the Department of Education (DepEd) said yesterday.
The suspension was made on Wednesday or Thursday, before the onslaught of Odette. Class resumption would still be determined, the DepEd said.
It added that 671 schools in eight regions were used as evacuation centers, with over 10.7 million learners affected by the typhoon.
Education Secretary Leonor Briones visited over the weekend the Dauin Central School and other schools in Negros Oriental to check the facilities and buildings.
“Despite the typhoon and the challenges we are experiencing right now, we still have to ensure that our teachers, personnel and learners are being assisted in delivering quality basic education,” Briones said.
