DFA recalls Philippines ambassador to Brazil

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has recalled the Philippines’ top diplomat in Brazil to explain the reported maltreatment of her service staff.

“The Philippine Ambassador to Brazil has been recalled effective immediately to explain the maltreatment of her service staff,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said yesterday on Twitter.

The DFA has instructed Ambassador Marichu Mauro to return home immediately following the release of video footage showing her berating and mistreating her household staff.

The household staff left Brazil on Oct. 21 and is back in the Philippines. 

“The DFA is reaching out to her to ensure her wellbeing and cooperation in the investigation,” the DFA said in a statement. “The DFA assures the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted.”
