Enteng exits Philippines; rains to persist

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical storm Enteng (international name Jangmi) moved out of the Philippine area of responsibility yesterday, but a new tropical cyclone was expected to develop west of Pangasinan.

As of 4 p.m., the low-pressure area was estimated at 250 kilometers west of Dagupan City, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

The weather system has a chance of intensifying into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, according to PAGASA senior weather forecaster Chris Perez.

Perez said the southwest monsoon, which was being enhanced by the low-pressure area, will continue to bring rains over Ilocos region as well as the provinces of Bataan and Zambales until today.

Cloudy skies with scattered rains will also persist over the rest of Northern and Central Luzon, Metro Manila and Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan).

Perez said Metro Manila can expect improvement in weather conditions starting tomorrow.

Enteng did not hit any part of the country but it enhanced the southwest monsoon, which dumped rains over Luzon and parts of the Visayas over the weekend.

As of 3 p.m. yesterday, the center of Enteng was at 730 kilometers northeast of Northern Luzon, packing winds of 75 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph.

It was forecast to move north at 40 kph toward the southern part of South Korea.
