PAL suspends remaining international flights

MANILA, Philippines — Flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) has waved the white flag as it decides to temporarily cease operating all international flights starting tomorrow.?
PAL announced yesterday that all of its remaining international flights would be suspended from March 26 until April 14. ?All PAL domestic flights stopped last March 17 in compliance with the government’s community quarantine.
“After careful consideration, we concluded that PAL could no longer sustain even a limited number of international flights,” the country’s flag carrier said.?PAL cited the strict travel and entry restrictions imposed by more and more countries, the resulting collapse in demand for travel and the continuing challenges in staffing its Manila airport hub during the ongoing community quarantine as the reasons for its decision to temporarily stop remaining international operations. ?
“We shall now turn our attention to the task of conserving our resources in anticipation of the recovery and caring for the needs of our PAL team members, while we keep our fleet ready for the day that we resume flying,” the airline said. ?
PAL, however, said it would continue to make aircraft and service personnel available for special flights to retrieve stranded passengers as well as cargo flights to keep intact critical supply chains across the archipelago.?
PAL earlier decided to operate limited international services to and from Manila until March 31 amid losses in response to the government’s call to help foreign tourists return home and OFWs fly back to their places of work. – With Rudy Santos
