MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) yesterday downplayed President Duterte’s remarks that the country’s next police chief should be able to kill all drug lords.
PNP spokesman Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac allayed fears that Duterte’s latest statement could be interpreted that whoever is chosen as the next police chief is licensed to kill suspected drug traffickers.
He said the President was only emphasizing the need for lawmen to intensify efforts against high-value targets in the illegal drug trade but in accordance with the country’s laws.
He cited as proof the recent seizure of P2.6 billion worth of shabu in Makati and Las Piñas last week wherein a Chinese national and two Filipinos were arrested.
While they are always mindful in following established procedures in law enforcement operations, Banac said policemen will not hesitate to use force if drug suspects put up a fight.
