Senate honors Metrobank patriarch Dr. George S.K. Ty
MANILA, Philippines — The Senate honored yesterday the late Dr. George S.K. Ty for his philanthropic contributions to the country.
It adopted a resolution, introduced by Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon, to posthumously honor Ty for the work he has done to improve the lives of many Filipinos.
“Dr. Ty trail-blazed the way to corporate compassion and social responsibility and established the Metrobank Foundation Inc. (MBFI) as an instrument to share the benefits of Metrobank’s success,” Drilon said.
“The hard work of the late Dr. Ty, a visionary business leader and an icon of philanthropy, turned the Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. into a vital economic backbone of the country.”
According to the resolution, the MBFI, under Ty, has become one of the biggest and most trusted corporate philanthropic organizations in the country and has implemented various initiatives in the pursuit of its mission to improve the lives of the disadvantaged, accelerate social development, and promote excellence among key sectors of society.
“Even after the passing of Dr. Ty on 23 November 2018, his heart for community and life-long mission to make a difference in the lives of Filipinos and contribute to nation-building through the MBFI are passed on to and live through his beloved wife Mary Vy Ty, sons Arthur V. Ty and Alfred V. Ty, and daughters Anjanette T. Dy-Buncio and Alesandra Ty,” Drilon said.
Through the Metrobank Scholarship Program, more than 1,000 underprivileged youth have earned college degrees in Education, Information Technology, Engineering, Business Administration and Architecture.
The foundation also holds the annual Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge, which provides venues for students to hone their mathematics skills “in an atmosphere of friendly competition.”
