Korean Navy ships dock in Manila for goodwill visit
MANILA, Philippines — Two ships of the Republic of Korea Navy arrived in Manila's South Harbor Monday morning for a three-day goodwill visit.
The Philippine Navy welcomed South Korean destroyer Munmu the Great and support vessel Hwacheon.
The South Korean navy ships will stay in the country until September 4.
The Philippine Navy's first corvette BRP Conrado Yap (PS39) was a donation from the South Korean Navy.
BRP Conrado Yap, formerly called Chunju (PCC-762), was commissioned with the South Korean Navy from 1987 to 2016.
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana earlier said the South Korean government plans to donate two more of its Pohang-class corvettes, the same type as BRP Conrado Yap, to the Philippines.
The Philippines is also planning to order two new frigates from South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries.
The two new frigates will be called BRP Jose Rizal and BRP Antonio Luna once commissioned with the Philippine Navy.
These two missile-capable Rizal-class frigates are expected to be delivered to the country by 2020 and 2021, respectively. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
