'Ineng' crosses Bashi Channel, threatens southern Taiwan

MANILA, Philippines — Severe Tropical Storm Ineng (International name: Bailu) is still on track to leave the Philippine area of responsibility Saturday afternoon and is now heading towards the southern tip of Taiwan, the state weather bureau said.

In its 11 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said “Ineng” is forecast to cross Bashi Channel. The weather disturbance was spotted 140 kilometers north northwest of Basco, Batanes at 10 a.m.

Ineng packs maximum sustained winds of 100 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 125 kph.

Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, Kalinga, Northern Abra and Ilocos Norte are still under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal no. 1.

Signal no. 2 is still declared in Batanes and Babuyan Islands.

“Areas under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals, especially those under higher TCWS, are still warned against strong winds associated with STS ‘Ineng,’” PAGASA said.

“Sea travel is risky over the seaboards of areas under TCWS and the seaboards of Luzon due to potentially rough sea conditions,” it added.
