DAVAO CITY, Philippines — The non-profit Philippine Eagle Foundation has launched a new educational initiative called “Raptors in Flight!” featuring the great Philippine Eagle and other birds of prey at the Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos, Calinan District.

According to foundation executive director Dennis Salvador, the program  demonstrates the raptors’ natural behavior while flying and hunting. The program aims to raise awareness of the plight of the Philippine Eagle and encourage wildlife appreciation in general.

Eight raptor species, including the Giant Scops Owl, Mindanao Lowland Scops Owl, Pinsker’s Hawk Eagle, Philippine Serpent Eagle, Brahminy Kite, Grey-headed Fishing Eagle and the White-bellied Sea Eagle participated in the flight demonstration yesterday.

The program launch was in time for the celebration of the annual Kadayawan Festival, which also features the majesty of the Philippine Eagle in different perspectives.

“This is the first and only demonstration in the world to show a Philippine Eagle flying on cue,” Salvador said.

“It truly is a sight to see. We hope that through this educational experience, more people would come to appreciate our feathered friends, and in turn inspire them to contribute to the conservation mission and make a difference,” he added.

Tickets cost P300 for adults and P250 for kids, inclusive of tour of the Philippine Eagle Center, film viewing and a chance to meet and greet the foundation’s mascot, Malaya. It is on a first come, first serve basis as each session can only accommodate up to 75 people. Private shows are also available on request.
