MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health on Wednesday issued a reminder on how to prevent diseases transmitted by mosquitoes after it declared a national dengue epidemic.

The World Health Organization also issued tips on how to prevent dengue.
“Dengue is flu-like illness spread by the bite of an aedes mosquito infected with dengue virus,” the organization said.
It informed the public that the biting intensity of mosquitoes is “highest two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset.”
WHO said dengue has the following symptoms:
- High fever of 40°Celsius/104°Farenheit

Severe headache

Pain behind the eyes

Muscle and joint pains

Nausea
-
Vomiting
-
Swollen glands
-
Rash
It, however, warned that “there is no treatment for dengue. But it can be prevented.”
WHO advised the public to use mosquito repellents, mosquito nets and insecticides. It also recommended the wearing of long sleeves to avoid getting bitten by the disease-carrying insect.
It also suggested the use of screen windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering your homes.
Meanwhile, DOH and the Philippine Information Agency provided four ways to prevent dengue and chikungunya which they called 4s.
