MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde yesterday urged Muslims to dispense with using firearms to celebrate Eid’l Fitr, the end of Ramadan, on Wednesday.

“The PNP joins our Muslim brothers and sisters in joyous celebration of this festive event,” he said at a press briefing in Camp Crame in Quezon City.

But Albayalde appealed to Muslims not to use their firearms to commemorate Eid’l Fitr.

“May I also remind everyone especially in the south to refrain from the traditional practice of celebratory gunfire to celebrate the occasion,” he said.

Meanwhile, the PNP remains on alert for lawless groups which might sow terror on Wednesday.

“We remain alert and watchful for any untoward incident that may spoil the solemnity of this occasion,” he said.
