MANILA, Philippines — Twelve senatorial hopefuls are replacing the six senators who have reached the end of their term, after Monday’s elections.
Among the Senate graduates include opposition member Antonio Trillanes IV, alongside Alan Peter Cayetano, Chiz Escudero, Gringo Honasan, Loren Legarda and Koko Pimentel who have reached the duration of their six-year terms. Cayetano, a close ally of President Rodrigo Duterte, was appointed as Foreign Affairs secretary in May 2017.
Meanwhile, Pimentel is seeking reelection.
Despite having ran for two consecutive terms, Pimentel was first to file his Certificate of Candidacy last October, citing an “unfinished business” in the Senate.
The incumbent senator was unable to serve a full term on his post from 2007 to 2013, due to an electoral protest.
Together with Pimentel, six other incumbent senators seeking reelection are Sens. Grace Poe, Nancy Binay, Cynthia Villar, JV Estrada, Sonny Angara and assistant minority leader Bam Aquino, who was recently endorsed by staunch administration ally and Senate President Tito Sotto III.
Others retaining their seat in the Senate are the proclaimed winners in the 2016 senatorial election. These include Liberal Party stalwart Franklin Drilon, Joel Villanueva, Sotto, Panfilo Lacson, Richard Gordon, Juan Miguel Zubiri, Manny Pacquiao, Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan, Risa Hontiveros, Sherwin Gatchalian, Ralph Recto and detained Leila de Lima.
