MANILA, Philippines — More than 55 percent of kidnapping cases documented in the country last year happened in Mindanao, which has been under martial law since 2017.

Data from the Philippine National Police (PNP) showed that of the 69 kidnap-for-ransom cases in 2018, 38 incidents or 55.07 percent occurred in Mindanao.

A total of 30 incidents were recorded in Luzon while one case was reported in the Visayas.

The PNP said 17 of the cases have been cleared, which means the suspects have been identified and charges filed in court.

One case has been solved, with the suspect arrested, while the rest are still under investigation.

From January to April this year, the PNP recorded 10 kidnapping cases nationwide.

PNP chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde earlier said there are still kidnapping incidents in Mindanao where the Abu Sayyaf and other lawless gangs are based in the provinces of Basilan and Sulu.

However, Albayalde pointed out that not all parts of Mindanao have problems in terms of kidnapping.

“We can see it for ourselves na hindi magulo and it’s not all of Mindanao. There are only certain portions of Mindanao that are critical,” he said.
