MANILA, Philippines — The government should set aside at least two percent of positions for persons with disabilities, up from the currently mandated one percent, Sen. Paolo Benigno Aquino IV said Sunday.
Aquino, who filed a bill to amend the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons, said companies should also reserve one percent of posts for PWDs.
The proposal, Senate Bill 1249, remains pending at the Senate Committee on Social Welfare, Welfare and Rural Development.
"Through this legislation, the government offices will be mandated to ensure that two percent of their employees comprise of PWDs whereas private organizations will be required to employ a workforce, at least 1% of which is made up of PWDs," the senator said.
Under the current law, companies with more than 100 employees are encouraged to allot one percent of posts for PWD workers.
"Any qualified PWD should have access to employment opportunities and allow them to be productive members of the labor force, providing reliable and dedicated service just like any ordinary, able-bodied personnel," the senator said.
