MANILA, Philippines — The annual Winter Escapade – a joint tourism promotional program of the Departments of Foreign Affairs and of Tourism – brought in 241 tourists from Canada, mostly balikbayans, to explore the country’s beaches and rich Filipino culture.
The eight-day tour program, which started yesterday, includes visits to Manila’s historical sites like Fort Santiago, Baluarte de San Diego and the San Agustin church and museum in Intramuros as well as a heritage tour in Taal and water adventures in the famous beaches of Batangas and El Nido, Palawan.
Philippine Ambassador to Canada Petronila Garcia said the Winter Escapade, now on its sixth year, remains a “very effective” strategy to promote the country as a tourism destination and a place for investment.
She said each participant spends an average of Cad$500 a day in the country.
“Aside from the obvious financial value, we also give them the sense of being part of the Filipino culture,” she added.
Canadian Ronald Waters, a first-time participant, is excited to see the Philippines and meet his in-laws in Cebu.
