Philippines among countries most affected by extreme weather
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines is second among the top 10 countries in terms of the number of people affected by extreme weather events last year and 10th with the highest death toll, the Center for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) said in its analysis of 281 events for 2018.
A study of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) also said nearly 62 million people were impacted by extreme weather events last year and called for better management of the issue worldwide.
It also found that earthquakes and tsunamis claimed more lives than any other type of hazard, with over 10,000 lives lost in the last year.
India has the most number of people, at almost 24 million, that were affected by extreme weather. The Philippines came in second with 6,490,216 people affected last year.
They were followed by China (6,415,024); Nigeria (3,938,204); Guatemala (3,291,359); Kenya (3,211,188); Afghanistan (2,206,750); USA (1,762,103); Japan (1,599,497); and Madagascar (1,472,190).
In terms of the total death toll in 2018, the UNISDR study identified the Top 10 countries as Indonesia (4,535); India (1,388); Guatemala (427); Japan (419); China (341); Nigeria (300); USA (298); Pakistan (240); Korea DPR (237) and Philippines (221).
