MANILA, Philippines — Catholics can put up their belen or the Nativity scene as the season of Advent starts today, but they should not yet include the image of the baby Jesus.
Fr. Roy Bellen, head of the Archdiocese of Manila (RCAM)’s office of communications, said the image of the baby Jesus should only be included in the scene on Christmas Eve or during the Dec. 24 vigil mass.
Bellen explained that since Jesus’ birthday falls on the 25th of December, his image should be excluded from the Nativity scene prior to this day.
He said the Advent is a period of waiting for the coming or birth of the Lord Jesus.
Bellen expressed hope that the youth would learn about patience and the value of waiting during this season.
“Waiting teaches us the value of patience and gives us the opportunity to show someone or something is important. When you wait, it means that the person you are waiting for is important. This is the formative value of Advent.”
