'Samuel' to make landfall tonight over Dinagat-Samar-Leyte area

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Samuel has maintained strength as it barrels toward the Dinagat-Samar-Leyte area where it is expected to make landfall tonight, PAGASA said.

In its 5 a.m. severe weather bulletin on Tuesday, PAGASA said the center of "Samuel" was estimated at 395 km east of Surigao City. It is forecast to move northwest at 20 kph.

"Samuel" packs maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 65 kph.

PAGASA said moderate to heavy rains which may trigger floods and landslides are expected over the regions of Caraga, Northern Mindanao, Eastern Visayas, Central and Western Visayas and Bicol.

It advised residents of these areas, especially those living near or in river channels and low-lying and mountainous areas, to take precautionary measures and coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices.

Fisherfolk and those with small seacraft were also warned against venturing out over the areas under Signal No. 1 and the eastern seaboard of southern Luzon.
