Signal No. 1 up in 4 Caraga provinces due to 'Samuel'

MANILA, Philippines ? PAGASA has raised Signal No. 1 over the Caraga provinces of Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte and Dinagat Islands.

It added that Signal No. 1 might be raised over Southern Leyte and Eastern Samar as it warned of possible floods and landslides in areas of the Visayas and Mindanao due to Tropical Depression Samuel.

In its 5 a.m. severe weather bulletin, the state weather bureau warned that moderate to heavy rains might trigger floods and landslides in Caraga, Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley, Southern Leyte, Bohol, Camiguin and Misamis Oriental.

PAGASA advised residents of these areas, especially those living near or in river channels or in low-lying and mountainous areas, to take precautionary measures and coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices.

Fisherfolk and those with small seacraft were also warned against venturing out over the areas under Signal No. 1 and the eastern seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao.

As of 4 a.m. Monday, the center of "Samuel" was estimated at 660 km east-southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

It is moving west-northwest at 15 kph, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 65 kph.
