MANILA, Philippines — State weather bureau PAGASA on Friday announced that the season of northeast monsoon or “amihan” has officially begun.

In a statement, PAGASA weather division chief Esperanza Cayanan said the “strong to gale force northeasterly winds have prevailed over the seaboards of northern Luzon.”

She added that there is a gradual cooling of surface air temperature over northern Luzon.

“These meteorological conditions signify that the onset of the northest monsoon season has started,” Cayanan said.

“Amihan” is the cool weather associated with the holiday season.

Cayanan also said that Filipinos should brace for the cold and dry air and surges of cold temperature in the coming days.

Early in October, PAGASA announced that the season of southwest monsoon or “habagat” has officially ended.
