SWS: 3 in 4 Filipinos say country in ‘right direction’
MANILA, Philippines — Majority of Filipinos believe that the Philippines is going in the “right direction,” according to the latest Social Weather Stations’ poll.
The survey, conducted from September 15 to 23, found that 75 percent of adult Filipinos said that the country is moving in the “right direction.” This is five points above the 70 percent logged in June 2018.
Only 22 percent believe the opposite, saying the country is going in the “wrong direction.” The remaining three percent did not provide an answer.
The five-point rise in the nationwide proportion of those who say the country is in the “right direction” was attributed to the increases in all areas, the polling firm noted.
The highest was recorded in Mindanao, President Rodrigo Duterte’s bailiwick, at 89 percent. It was followed by Balance Luzon at 73 percent, the Visayas at 69 percent and Metro Manila at 65 percent.
The belief that the country is in the “right direction” also rose in classes D or the “masa” and E and among non-college graduates. The proportion for class D increased to 75 percent in September from 70 percent in June, and class E to 72 percent in September from 70 percent in June.
There was an 11-point hike among non-elementary graduates, from 66 percent in June to 77 percent in September.
SWS explained that the net satisfaction with the performance of Duterte and the national administration was higher among those who say the country is in the “right direction,” compared to those who say it is in the wrong direction.
A separate SWS survey found 70 percent of adult Filipinos satisfied, 16 percent dissatisfied and 14 percent undecided with the performance of the chief executive. This yielded a net satisfaction rating of +54, classified as “very good.”
The public satisfaction with the current administration suffered an eight-point drop, from “very good” +58 recorded in the second quarter to “very good” +50 in the third quarter.
The survey was conducted using face-to-face interviews of 1,500 adults during the time when the news of the nullification of the amnesty of Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV and Typhoon Ompong dominated the headlines.
It has sampling error margins of ±3 percent for national percentages, ±4 percent for Balance Luzon, and ±6 percent each for Metro Manila, Visayas, and Mindanao.
