MANILA, Philippines — Folk musician Freddie Aguilar on Thursday has thrown his bid to become a senator.

The “Anak” singer was the second to file his certificate of candidacy at the Commission on Elections head office.

Aguilar, 65, will run under the administration’s PDP-Laban.

He placed in the 23rd to 32nd bracket in the pre-senatorial election survey released by Pulse Asia last month.

“After 40 years, nakumbinsi na nila ako tumakbo sa Senado. Matagal na nila akong kinukumbinsi dahil daw sa aking mga advocacy sa kanta ko at ‘yung nagpapayag sa aking ay mga ordinaryong mamamayan,” he said.

Aguilar, who sang one of Duterte’s campaign jingles, was reported in 2016 to have been appointed as the chairman of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts but commissioners instead picked Virgilio Almario—a poet, literary historian and National Artist for Literature—for the elective position in 2017. — with reports from Patricia Lourdes Viray
