MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED 9:20 a.m., September 14)— As several areas were placed under Signal No. 1 due to Typhoon Ompong (international name: Mangkhut) on Thursday, several local government units called off classes for Friday, September 14.

The LGUs made the announcement in anticipation of the onslaught of "Ompong" which is expected to make a landfall over Cagayan on Saturday morning.

The state weather bureau earlier said "Ompong" could potentially develop into a super typhoon but on Thursday said it might no longer intensify into one.
