MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Ompong (international name Mangkhut) has slightly slowed down as it moves westward over the Philippine Sea, state weather bureau PAGASA said Thursday.
Ompong, which is forecasted to develop into a super typhoon, continues to threaten northern Luzon. It is expected to make landfall in northern Cagayan on Saturday morning.
At 10 a.m., the typhoon was located 725 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes with maximum sustained winds of up to 205 kph and gusts of up to 255 kph. It is expected to move west at 20 kph.
Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal Number 1 is raised in the following areas:

- Cagayan, including Babuyan group of Islands
- Camarines Sur
- Camarines Norte

- Nueva Vizcaya
- Quezon, including Polillo Island
- Quirino
- Rizal
- Sorsogon
- Ticao Island
Areas under Signal Number 1 will experience occasional rains and gusty winds of 30 to 60 kph within the next 36 hours.
PAGASA warned fisherfolk and those with small seacrafts not to go out to the sea in affected areas, including the northern seaboard of northern Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao.
