Thousands of students join Manila Bay cleanup
MANILA, Philippines — Thousands of college students yesterday trooped to Roxas Boulevard to join a clean-up drive of Manila Bay.
Students from Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Technological University of the Philippines, Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Technology, San Beda University, National University, San Sebastian College and University of Makati gathered as early as 6:30 a.m. at the southbound lane near the US embassy and started cleaning the bay area after a short program.
Aldrin Tuma, executive director of the Global Peace Foundation Philippines, said the activity was part of their project to clean up the coastal area of Manila Bay.
“The cleanup of Manila Bay was part of our mandate. We will be doing this yearly and we will be coordinating with other schools to open up the eyes of the students on the importance of the environment,” Tuma said.
At least three truckloads of garbage were collected during the two-hour activity.
Also present during the occasion were representatives of the Manila City Hall and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.
