De Lima to launch new book to mark second birthday in detention
MANILA, Philippines — To mark her second birthday in detention, Sen. Leila de Lima will launch her second book for Filipinos who believe in her innocence despite what she called “trumped-up” charges hurled against her.
Titled “Fight for Freedom and Other Writings,” the book will be formally released on the eve of her 59th birthday on August 26.
The book contains a collection of writings, speeches, letters and notes about De Lima and her quest for freedom, De Lima’s camp said in a statement.
“To my oppressors, jailing me despite my innocence is your burden to keep. To the Filipino people: No matter the persecution, I will never stop fighting. [This book] is dedicated to family, friends, and supporters who cry out for my freedom,” the senator said in the book’s dedication.
It is the second time for De Lima to publish her book, the first time was on Feb. 24, 2018 to mark her first year in detention.
A fierce critic of the Duterte administration and its deadly anti-narcotic campaign, De Lima was arrested on Feb. 24, 2017 on drug charges that she said were part of a presidential vendetta.
The former justice secretary turned lawmaker launched a Senate probe into alleged unlawful killings by the police under President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs, which has left scores dead.
