MANILA, Philippines — More than 600 inmates of the Manila City Jail male dormitory on Thursday have finally graduated from the vocational courses they took under the Department of Education’s Alternative Learning System.

The ceremony was held inside the city jail with the theme “Bringing the Mountain to Mohammed.”

At least 617 inmates graduated from vocational courses such as tile setting, pastry and bread making, and “hilot and wellness.”

The program aims to provide the inmates skills and knowledge necessary for work after they are freed from prison.

In partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, the ALS is a parallel learning system for those who do not have access to formal education. ALS provides basic education to out-of-school youth and adults. — Philstar intern Ali Ian Marcelino Biong
