MMDA suspends implementation of EDSA 'driver-only' car ban
MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority on Friday said it has decided to temporarily suspended the full implementation of a "driver-only" car ban in EDSA.
The expanded high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane policy in EDSA was supposed to be fully implemented on August 23.
The MMDA said it will suspend the policy that bans single-passenger cars during rush hours until the policy-making Metro Manila Council convenes.
MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia said all policies that the agency would implement should be presented to the Metro Manila Council and should be voted upon.
The mayors of the cities and lone municipality in the National Capital Region are on the MMC.
"So, for now, we will hold (the implementation) then the council will vote. I don't want to preempt our mayors," Garcia said in a televised press conference.
Several senators have called for the suspension of the implementation of driver-only ban in EDSA as it was implemented without public consultation and hearing.
The policy, which was implemented on a trial basis last Wednesday, bans single-passenger cars in the whole stretch of EDSA from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. from Monday to Friday. — Patricia Lourdes Viray with a report from Robertzon Ramirez
