Hard work will augment lack of experience at SC — Reyes
MANILA, Philippines — Associate Justice Andres Reyes Jr. is not deterred by his short stint at the Supreme Court in his bid for the chief justice post.
Reyes is President Rodrigo Duterte’s third appointee to the Supreme Court. He is the third most junior justice who applied for the top judge post.
On Wednesday, he faced the Judicial and Bar Council for a public interview. Before him, his colleagues Associate Justices Lucas Bersamin, Teresita De Castro and Diosdado Peralta faced the panel for an interview in the morning.
The three justices received an automatic nomination to the chief justice post by virtue of tradition.
Reyes, for his part, received a nomination from retired Sandiganbayan Associate Justice Raoul Victorino. The former anti-graft justice nominated all SC justices to the chief justice post.
Asked if how he will augment his lack of experience at the SC, Reyes said: “I applied, and when I entered this court, I promised to the court that I will work very hard and do justice for our people.”
He also said that he came from a family of justices and he would like to “dedicate his life to the idea that justice could be served.”
The junior justice was also asked how he will assert himself to his peers should he be given the chief justice post.
“Courage. There must also be dialogue,” Reyes said.
“The SC can only act as one. I would have to defer to the majority of the SC,” he added.
