IN PHOTOS: Monsoon downpour messes with wedding, floods streets, spawns sea of garbage
MANILA, Philippines — The heavy monsoon downpour has caused floods, some reaching up to chest-deep, and prompted the evacuation of thousands.
Motorists struggled after the overflow from Manila Bay had spilled to the nearby Roxas Boulevard on Saturday. Waves of trash amassed in Manila Bay were also shown being cleaned up on Saturday and Sunday by volunteers in the aftermath of the downpour.
Similar scenes were seen in Marikina City where some 528 families or 2,530 individuals were evacuated on Saturday after Marikina River had reached critical levels at 18.01 meters raising the alert to third alarm.
Photos of children trapped due to waist-deep flood on Saturday were shown as they were being carried by their parents home. The city has suspended classes in all levels as well as school activities the same day due to the persistent rain.
Marikina City Mayor Marcelino Teodoro has also declared on Sunday morning a suspension of classes in all levels for Monday, August 13, amid the continuous downpour.
By 11 a.m. Sunday Marikina River's water level has gone down to 16.5 meters but second alarm is still up, according to Marikina's Public Information Office.
On the other hand, 450 families or 1,524 individuals were in 47 evacuation centers in the cities of Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas and Valenzuela, The STAR reported.
In Pasig City, some 1,146 families or 5,264 individuals were evacuated in Pasig City as of 8 a.m. Sunday.
PAGASA early Sunday said heavy to intense rains could be expected Sunday as Tropical Storm Karding (international name: Yagi), which exited the Philippine area of responsibility Saturday morning, was forecast to continue to enhance the southwest monsoon or "habagat." Monsoon rains are expected over Metro Manila until Tuesday.
Meanwhile, a bride walked down the flooded aisle of Sto. Rosario Church in Hagonoy, Bulacan.
