Typhoon off Central Luzon to enter PAR by Monday
MANILA, Philippines — The typhoon monitored more than 2,000 kilometers east of Central Luzon is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Monday, state weather bureau PAGASA said Friday.
The typhoon, which has international name “Maria,” will be named “Gardo” once it enters PAR.
In its 11 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said the typhoon “has rapidly intensified as it moves generally north-northwestward.”
“Maria” packs maximum sustained winds of 165 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 205 kilometers per hour.
While “Maria” or the potential “Gardo” is not expected to hit any part of the land, it may enhance the southwest monsoon or habagat, PAGASA warned.
Habagat will bring occasional rains over Western Visayas, Mindoro and Palawan until Saturday evening. Monsoon rains may also affect Metro Manila and western sections of Central Luzon, Calabarzon and Mimaropa starting Sunday.
