MANILA, Philippines — Commuters will have to pay a minimum fare of P9 for jeepneys starting this week.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) yesterday granted a P1 provisional fare increase for public utility jeepneys (PUJs) in Metro Manila and adjoining regions.

LTFRB chairman Martin Delgra said the fare increase, from the current P8, will take effect immediately after the order is issued, expected this afternoon or before the week ends.

The LTFRB approved the provisional fare increase for the first four kilometers of PUJs plying the National Capital Region, as well as Regions 3 and 4.

The petition was filed by transport groups Alliance of Concerned Transport Organization, Pasang Masda and Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines .

LTFRB board member Aileen Lizada cited rising costs of living amid surging fuel prices as some of the basis for the grant of the petition for provisional increase.

Lizada said the LTFRB received the go-signal from the National Economic Development Authority to approve the fare hike.

The two officials cautioned jeepney operators and drivers not to increase fares until the official order has been issued by the LTFRB.

In February last year, the government granted a P1 fare hike, increasing the minimum fares for jeepneys from P7 to P8.
