April 27 declared as Lapu-Lapu Day, nationwide special working holiday
MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte has signed into law a republic act, which declares April 27 of every year as Lapu-Lapu Day or Adlaw ni Lapu-Lapu.
Republic Act 11040 declares April 27 a special working public holiday throughout the country and a special non-working holiday in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.
Employees who work during a special non-working day shall be paid 100 percent of their regular salary with an additional 30 percent of the daily rate.
Meanwhile, employees who go to work on special working holidays are entitled only to their basic rate as such days are also considered work on ordinary working days.
The holiday was declared in commemoration of the victory of Lapu-Lapu and his men against foreign invaders led by Ferdinand Magellan in the "Battle of Mactan" on Apr. 27, 1521.
“Whereas, the Battle of Mactan is among the significant events in the Philippines history and serve as testimony to the rich cultural and historical heritage of the ceremonies,” stated Proclamation 461, which Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea signed on April 2.
Duterte signed the act into law on June 29 and will take effect 15 days after its publication either in the Official Gazette or in a newspaper of general circulation in the country.
RA 11040 was a consolidation of Senate Bill 108 and House Bill 6782 which the Senate and the House of Representatives passed in March earlier this year. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
