Farewell to a true patriot: Colleagues mourn Golez, 71

MANILA, Philippines — A true patriot and public servant was how his colleagues regarded the late National Security Adviser Roilo Golez, who passed away Monday.

Golez, who also served as the representative of Parañaque City, died of an apparent heart attack. He was 71.

Sen. Francis Pangilinan, Liberal Party president, called Golez a “true freedom fighter” for continuously speaking up about the country’s territorial rights before his passing.

“He was a picture of vibrant life and untiring public service until his very last days. He was out of politics but he continued to touch base not only with his former constituents, but Filipinos all over the country with his journeys to different places,” Pangilinan said in a statement.

The Philippines lost a “true patriot” with the death of Golez, acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio said.

“He was an indefatigable defender of the West Philippine Sea. He embraced lawfare as a peaceful means of asserting our sovereign rights in the WPS. His death strengthens our resolve to carry on,” Carpio said.

“Roilo Golez, the naval officer. My snappiest salute, sir. You served the country well, living life like a true soldier—fighting for the country as a last act,” Rep. Ruffy Biazon (Muntinlupa), vice chairperson of the House defense panel, also said.

‘Long, selfless service’

Sen. Nancy Binay thanked Golez for his “long and selfless service to the nation.”

“Rep. Golez was a voice of reason and conscience, a patriot who was vocal in various national security issues and concerns. His analyses of issues and words of advice will be missed,” she said.

Golez, a graduate of the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, was a former Philippine Navy officer.

He also became a postmaster general and the governor of the Philippine Red Cross.

Golez also served as a representative of Parañaque back when it only had a lone district from 1992 to 2001. He returned to the lower house, representing the second district of Parañaque from 2004 to 2013.

The Romblon native was national security adviser to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from 2001 to 2004.

Senators Juan Edgardo Angara, JV Ejercito, Francis Escudero and Joel Villanue also offered their condolences to the family of the late statesman.
