'Domeng' intensifes into a tropical storm

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Domeng (international name: Maliksi) has intensified into a tropical storm on Friday, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

In its 11 a.m. advisory, PAGASA said that "Domeng" continues its track moving in a northeastern direction.

As of 10 a.m., "Domeng" was located 655 km east of Tuguegarao, Cagayan. It packs maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

No tropical cyclone warning signal has been hoisted in any area of the country.

"Domeng" continues to boost the southwest monsoon or habagat, bringing moderate to heavy rains over Aurora, Bataan and the regions of Bicol, Calabarzon, Mimaropa and Western Visayas.

Scattered rain showers will prevail over the rest of Luzon and Visayas on Friday, PAGASA added.

Residents are advised to remain alert of possible flash floods and landslides. 

"Domeng" is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility on Sunday.

The state weather bureau also announced the start of the rainy season in the country on Friday noon.
