MANILA, Philippines — A group of business owners in Boracay called out the government for what they said is a lack of updates on the work of agencies involved in the rehabilitation of the tourist destination famed for its white sand beaches.
In a statement released Sunday, Boracay Foundation Inc. said there is still no central source of information or a venue to get official data or to direct questions one month since the island’s six-month closure for rehabilitation began.
“A centralized helpdesk where all agencies involved could easily be accessed would be of great help for all. Currently, community members and the private sector hear updates only through local media and not directly from the source agency,” BFI said.
It urged the involved agencies to update the traders and residents on the status of their work, timelines, upcoming plans and hindrances to the projects, if there are any.
“We look forward for an active and inclusive inter-agency task force, involving stakeholders in its rehabilitation plans. We look forward to open lines of communication which are necessary to ensure success, understanding, cooperation and efficiency during the island’s rehabilitation,” BFI said.
The group also raised concerns on the access to the minimal assistance provided to the displaced workers.
“We want to know if budget for the entire rehabilitation including support to the displaced workers are not just in the pipeline but are now easily available and that rehabilitation construction works will be done 24/7,” it said.
Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu said that more time might be needed to rehabilitate the island as 43 illegal pipes were discovered on the beachfront of Boracay where most tourists go swimming.
Boracay is expected to reopen on October 26, 2018.
