Poe to DOTr: Don't ignore plight of drivers, operators
MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Grace Poe once again prodded the Department of Transportation to find sustainable solutions to concerns raised by drivers and operators who will be affected by the government's jeepney modernization program.
"The complaints raised by small drivers and operators about the modernization program are valid concerns that should not be swept under the rug," the chair of the Senate committee on public services said in a statement Tuesday.
During a nationwide transport strike on Monday, Piston president George San Mateo reiterated that the group does not oppose the move to modernize public utility vehicles but stressed that the drivers and operators could not afford the new models.
Poe noted that several transport groups proposed looking for cheaper sources of new units that would be as environment-friendly and as cost-efficient, while others said the Transportation department should tap local manufacturers.

"It may be worth listening to all these proposals, so that once and for all, we can move the modernization program forward," she said.
Poe urged the DOTr to make public transportation affordable, reliable and safe for commuters.
The senator also wants to know what has been discussed during the meetings with transport operators that DOTr chief Arthur Tugade vowed to conduct.
"There should be a meeting of the minds that can only be achieved through continuous dialogue," she said.
Poe added: "The people will be on the losing end with a public transportation in shambles."

Malacañang on Tuesday morning suspended classes at all levels in Metro Manila, supposedly for the safety of students.
The class suspension came amid the assurance of transport groups that they have no plans to extend their nationwide strike.
