MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines (UP) has improved its ratings in the latest global ranking of universities based on broad disciplines and specific subject areas offered to students.

UP was ranked in four out of five broad disciplines in the latest world university rankings per subject released by international higher education information provider Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) on Wednesday.

It improved its ratings in the fields of social sciences and management, from 274th to 238th, and arts and humanities, from 293rd to 266th.

UP also retained its 401-450 ranking in the fields of engineering and technology and life sciences and medicine, while it was not ranked in the field of natural science.

On specific subjects, the country’s premier state university also entered the top 500 universities in 10 out of 48 subject areas, up from seven subjects last year.

Based on the latest rankings, UP improved its performance in English, language and literature (from 151-200 to 101-150), medicine (from 351-400 to 301-350), modern languages (from 151-200 to 101-150) and sociology (from 201-250 to 151-200).

It maintained its ranking in archaeology (101-150) and environmental sciences (251-300), while it went down in agriculture and forestry (from 101-150 to 151-200).

UP also ranked in politics (151-200), linguistics (201-250) and computer science and information systems (451-500).

The rankings were based on four indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, and the “H-Index” that measures both the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar affiliated to the university.

Two other Philippine universities also entered the QS world university rankings per subject this year.

The Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) slightly improved its ranking in the broad discipline of social sciences and management (from 387th to 385th), but fell behind UP in the arts and humanities discipline (from 284th to 321st).

Meanwhile, the De La Salle University (DLSU) retained its 401-450 ranking in both the social sciences and management and arts and humanities disciplines.

On specific subjects, ADMU ranked in English, language and literature (from 201-250 to 151-200) and Sociology (251-300, same as last year), while DLSU retained its 151-200 ranking in both English, language and literature and linguistics subject areas.
