Kris Aquino slams trolls, fake news as she defends mom’s legacy
MANILA, Philippines — Actress and host Kris Aquino on Monday took to social media to criticize history revisionism and whitewashing as she reiterated her mom’s, former president Cory Aquino, legacy.
Kris’ lengthy social media post was published a day after the 32nd anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.
“So much of our history is trying to be rewritten & erased by those paying their trolls & fake news purveyors to whitewash their culpability for the killings & suffering they inflicted on our country during the years before our democracy from the dictatorship in 1986,” Kris wrote.
The actress-host turned social media personality was addressing trolls and purveyors of fake news and said that her family might not be perfect but she feels the need to stand up for her mother’s legacy amid the false truths being spread. She is optimistic that the truth would stand strong through time.
Kris stressed that the democracy being enjoyed by the country today is largely because of her mother.
“Yes– we live in a democracy, a large part of of that is thanks to her. Kaya malaya kayong sabihin ang lahat ng paninirang gusto nyong itapon sa aming pagkatao. Pero hindi ako naging dugo at laman ng babaeng ito kung hindi ko sya ipagtatanggol at ipamumukha sa mga walang respeto sa sumakabilang buhay na, yung putik na pilit nyong ginagamit para yurakan ang pagkatao nya ay kailanman hindi didikit dahil kasinungalingan ang pinanggagalingan,” Kris said.
"As my Mom taught me so well - a lie no matter how beautifully produced will remain just that- an embarrassing lie. But the TRUTH will stand strong through the test of history,” she added.
Kris used the photo of her and the late president taken during the Time Magazine’s 80th anniversary in 2006. She cited that Cory is the only Filipino to hold the distinct honor of being chosen as Woman of the Year in 1986.
She also cited that only three other individual women were awarded the same title. The list included Wallis Simpson in 1936, Queen Elizabeth II in 1952 and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2015.
Kris’s post also came after Presidential Communications Operations Office Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson created a poll asking her followers whether they believe that the 1986 revolt that toppled the Marcos regime and installed Cory as the country’s first woman president was a product of "fake news."
At least 84 percent of the respondents of the online poll believed the revolution was a product of fake news. The poll gained 61,800 votes.
Uson drew criticisms from netizens after posting the poll, with several of them calling out the PCOO official for insulting history and implying that the 1986 EDSA revolution is merely a product of fake news.
