MANILA, Philippines — President Duterte will extend anew the term of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa, who is scheduled to retire in April.

Duterte said he is doing so because the police chief enjoys his trust and confidence.

“The police have always been a problem... There are scoundrels, scalawags in every organization. That is why the PNP (chief) now, who is supposed to retire on the 24th of April and because he enjoys my trust and confidence, I will extend his term for a little bit longer,” the President said during the oath-taking of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce of the Philippines Inc. at Malacañang yesterday.

Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea said Dela Rosa’s tour of duty may be extended by another three months.

Dela Rosa, a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1986, reached his mandatory retirement age of 56 last Jan. 21.

The President had already extended his term by three months so that the police chief could handle “unfinished tasks.”

Dela Rosa will assume as chief of the Bureau of Corrections once he retires from the police service.
