Faeldon takes oath as new Office of Civil Defense deputy administrator
MANILA, Philippines — Nicanor Faeldon, who resigned as Customs chief last year, took his oath as the new deputy administrator of the Office of Civil Defense on Tuesday morning.
Faeldon took his oath before Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, who earlier said that they did not "request" for Faeldon, but will "welcome him with open arms."
The OCD is an attached agency of the Department of National Defense.
Faeldon was tagged in the P6.4 billion shabu shipment that slipped past Customs but has denied involvement in corruption at the burea. After the controversy, he tendered his resignation three times before President Rodrigo Duterte accepted it.
Sen. Panfilo Lacson accused Faeldon of receiving P100 million as "pasalubong" or welcome gift from smugglers and unscrupulous businessmen. Lacson said his accusation was confirmed by Isidro Lapeña, the head of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency who has since been appointed Customs chief.
Faeldon was appointed to his new post at the Office of Civil Defense on Dec. 22, 2017. This, despite Duterte's repeated statements that he would not tolerate a whiff of corruption from his officials.
Faeldon is currently detained in the Senate for his repeated refusal to testify before the Senate Blue Ribbon committee during its legislative probe into the P6.4 billion shabu shipment case. He was allowed a furlough to take his oath.
Lacson earlier said that Faeldon can execute his duties from his detention room at the Senate.
