MANILA, Philippines — President Duterte paid tribute to national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, whose martyrdom is marked today in Rizal Park.

“May we take this occasion as an opportunity to recognize Dr. Rizal’s ultimate sacrifice for the sake of our country. Let us reflect on his patriotism as we strive to continue his work of building a more united, peaceful and prosperous Philippines,” said Duterte, who is expected to lead the commemoration in Manila.

Duterte noted as an author and scholar, Rizal denounced corruption, greed and other social ills that up to this day continue to plague society.

“Even in death, he imparted upon us his aspirations for a nation that is free from the scourge of injustice, tyranny and suffering,” the President said.

Duterte, who has said he wanted to die like a hero, said Rizal inspired a movement that gave rise to the Filipino national identity.

During the dark chapter in the nation’s history, Duterte noted how Rizal’s writings served as the light that guided Filipino forebears in the fight for genuine equality and independence.

The nation is commemorating today the 121st anniversary of the martyrdom of Rizal, whose famous works as such “Noli Me Tangere,” “El Filibusterismo” and “Mi Ultimo Adios” are part of the required reading list in schools.

“I wish all of us a meaningful celebration,” Duterte said.
