BI deports 47 South Korean fugitives
MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Immigration has turned over 47 South Korean fugitives to the Korean government last week, the agency revealed on Tuesday.
Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said that 45 South Korean nationals were flown aboard Jeju Air from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport last December 14.
Two other South Korean, who were arrested in Cebu, were deported from Mactan-Cebu International Airport also on December 14.
The 47 fugitives were turned over to Korean Police authorities by Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II, Justice Undersecretaries Raymund Mecate and Erickson Balmes, Immigrations Deputy Commissioner Tobias Javier, Legal Division chief Arvin Santos, Board Secretary Jing Oliver Balina, Ports Operations Division chief Marc Red Mariñas, Immigration Prosecutor Homer Arellano, Deportation Unit head Candy Tan and Intelligence Officer Maynard Mariñas.
"All of them were expelled pursuant to deportation orders issued by our board of commissioners and they were all placed in our blacklist of undesirable aliens to prevent them from re-entering the Philippines," Morente said.
The BI said that this is also a move to decongest its detention facility at Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City.
"We have secured the necessary clearances to make sure that they have no pending civil and criminal cases before our courts," Morente added.
Lawyer Ma. Antonette Mangrobang, BI spokesperson, said the deportees are mostly wanted in Korean courts for "swindling and internet fraud, including voice phishing, while two of them are wanted for assault and physical injuries and one of illegal drugs."
Mangrobang also said that the deportees were arrested at the request of the International Police and Korean embassy in Manila.
